The depth you will need for the aggregate will depend on what size you use and what it is used for.

Generally you would lay 1/8 inch sized aggregate at 1.5" deep, but on a drive you would go to 2".

A 1/2 inch aggregate would need to be approx 2" and a little deeper on drives. The larger aggregate will settle and bond together better than the smaller which on drives may tend to rut and require regular maintenance to keep looking smooth.
